Jobs and employers.
They can be anything from the best thing ever to the worst, consuming time and thoughts that should be spent on friends, family and one's self. So, I was happy to give two weeks notice at the job where I felt unable to meet my boss's unreasonable expectations, for what I hope to be my dream job.
Full time art installation at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.
Just yesterday, I found this lovely typography-and-designed-filled ode to an former employee of the Knox Hat Company, circa 1907. Robert MacFarland was given a gorgeous token of appreciation for his time at the company.
It was a reminder that people can be appreciated for their contributions (something that many of my co-workers expressed when I told them of my impending departure.)
And so, I look forward to new inspiration for myself and this blog. In the mean time, enjoy the lovely artistic printing flickr user relic57 rediscovered and posted.

Houston & Other Places in Gorgeous Sanborn Insurance Map Titles
Insurance map titles and the word "gorgeous,"not what one would think. But feast your typography-appreciating eyes on the design beauty of Sanborn Insurance map title pages.
I've been kind of obsessed with these images since being introduced to them by BibliOdyssey's blog post on them. A google of Houston and Sanborn lead to Sanborn Maps of Texas (which are the source of the above images) from the UT Library Online website.

Wednesday Night Photo Post: Don't Know Why... Stormy Weather
I love storms. Especially if they occur while I am sitting at home. The last few afternoons have been pleasant breaks from the heat.

On our next trip to LA (when...?) I want to visit Watts Tower. Even more so after seeing this cool model online.

New On Flickr: The University of Houston Digital Library
The University of Houston Digital Library now has an additional internet presence, a new Flickr page. While the World Famous Red Headed Widows, ca. 1909 postcard not there yet, the Flickr page is only a few days old, so it will be interesting to see how the digital library uses it. Personally, I'd like to see all the historic Houston photographs placed on an available map.

Wednesday Night Photo Post: We Went to the Y... M... C... A...
The historic and outdated YMCA Building will make way for a more functional (and probably bland) replacement.

Wednesday Night Photo Post: Pretty. High.
Houstonian NarrowLarry posted some Flickr pix of the latest Orange Show Center for Visionary Art tour Getting High in Houston. Once again making me wish I could go on one of these trips. Too pricey. *sigh*

Here and There: Vacation Recap
Despite the large amount of time spent on the internet, I've yet to write a post-vacation follow-up since returning. So, here is a brief, bulletpoint list of the highlights, with websites and Flickr pictures.
Nice to be back in town.
- If you're driving the 10 west of San Antonio, make a point of hitting the Bear Moon Bakery & Cafe in Boerne. The drive off the highway and into the cute little town was rewarded with some great Piggies, their superior version of a Texas kolatche. Random find.

- El Paso - The House of Sugar. Gorgeous, meticulously maintained.
- Las Vegas - Visibly affected by the economic depression. It's been taking a toll on both people and neighborhoods. Never did get a chance to take pictures inside Vegas Masonic Lodge #32, as I could have during a visit to their morning coffee club, open to the public. Also sad that time didn't allow for visits to either the Neon Graveyard or the Erotic Heritage Museum (nsfw). Happy to visit Johnstons Stables. Wished that someone answered the phone while I was taking shots outside, had hoped to get inside the expansive and intriguing grounds. Very happy to go to Frankie's Tiki Room. Leaving Vegas, had great subs (A "Bobbie" & "Slaw Be Jo") at the Boulder City Capriotti's.
- Tinkertown, NM! A great off-the-beaten-track attraction. 3$ bucks well spent!
- Visited Santa Fe, MN. Had inexpensive, good food at Harry's Road House and a great night at the El Ray Inn. The historic motor lodge was the hotel highlight of the trip. Would stay there again and recommend it to road-weary travelers. All found in the AAA guidebook.
- Stayed in Holbrook, NM, a Route 66 town. Gave me a desire to do a trip along the Mother Road.
Nice to be back in town.
