Vote Early and Vote Often

Texas has the option of early voting, so me and the missus hit the polling station on Thursday. We had the kid in tow and she charmed the folks in the line. While waiting we joked about making a onesie that said, "I only smile at Obama supporters." I'm sure all the people in line were silently assigning party affiliations to everyone around them. I know I was judging on looks.

Some people made it easy to know who they weren't voting for.

Blurry Pictures of a Good Night: Mucca Pazza @ The Orange Show

Orange ShowThe deranged marching band Mucca Pazza (Italian for "mad cow") made it a night Thursday at the Orange Show.  I went out a simple curiosity about the band and a love of the Show.  I hadn't seen a performance there, and now I'm looking forward to see more events there.  The band and the venue were a perfect, if tight, fit.  They played phenomenal mad klezmer-punkish tunes in mismatched outfits, stomping and wandering about the crazed steps and walkways of the hand-made tourist attraction.   A mildly dangerous thing to normally do in sunlight, but at night blasting away on a musical instrument, it was fortunate a musician didn't twist an ankle or bust a head.  The band would be great for fans of Mr. Bungle, Secret Chiefs 3, Gogol Bordello, kelzmer fans, and the young at heart. I would like to book them for my kid's 5th-year birthday.

This post originally started out with just my pictures, taken on my Canon PowerShot A510, hence the title. Searching flickr, I found show photos taken by Jim "Eggs" Bricker (from the Houston music scene blog Breakfast on Tour) with his much better Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi.  Look closely and you might be able to tell the difference.

Not Safe for Children: What the DJ PLayed At the Fall Family Festival

Normally, I don't put pictures of Z or myself on the intertubes.  But this is an exception.

My wife's work had a big weekend blowout for staff and family. Inflatable bouncy rooms, Dunk-A-Cop, and a costume contest for the tots.

They also had a DJ, young looking kid with lots of gear and an interesting idea in child-appropriate music. His seamless mix from Prince's Erotic City to Rod Stewart's Do You Think I'm Sexy was particularly eyebrow raising.

Totally getting him for her first birthday party!

Houston's Junklandia

The Texas Junk Company has been on my list of places to visit since I moved here over a year ago. During the summer we went only to find the owner Bob was on vacations, searching for cowboy boots in small towns and going to Burning Man.

But now I've made the visit three times, and with camera in hand on the last visit. Two photos into that most recent trip and the camera's batteries gave up the ghost. *Sigh*

Someday the stars will align, the camera will be juiced up and once again I will be on the 200 block of Welch between Thursday-Saturday. And there will be many more pictures and maybe a purchase or two. But only if I have cash or check on hand.

The Return of Our Reassuring Overlords Has Put Me At Ease

Beacon with Pink Clouds, originally uploaded by bilbao58.

In the last few days I have noticed the the Eye of Sauron Williams Tower searchlight is up and running again. With its return, I feel just happier at night.

More so, I'm starting to feel a little glimmer of, dare I say it, productive creativity?!!! Meaning, sloth is my usual modus operandi; I motivated when I work for anyone but myself. Either I will actually find myself back to creating for personal enjoyment OR I have come to grips with my lack of productivity and this is me feeling relief that I'm okay with my slacker ways.

Time shall tell.
